Yes, there is. When most people hear the name “Westchester County”, they think
of an abundance of wealth. The reality is there is a significant and unacceptable
amount of poverty that exists all around the County.
The truth is in the numbers:
- 24% of children/youth are food insecure (hungry or at risk for hunger)
- 12.3% of households live at or below the federal poverty line ($25,926/year for a
family of 4) - but we know that the number for actual households living in poverty
is much higher as our cost of living is that much higher than the national average
- 22% of children and youth in Westchester are considered poor or low income
- 33% of babies born are born to moms on Medicaid
