These programs provide the most basic essentials families need to keep their babies clean, healthy and happy. Research shows that poverty is the single greatest threat to a baby’s mental and physical development. By providing these items, we can help give babies the best possible start in life.

BABY BANK

Program Overview

914Cares Baby Bank provides a six-month supply of infant essentials to families in need. These brand new, high quality items include strollers, car seats, pack-n-plays, first aid kits, towels, diapers, wipes, diaper cream, shampoo, formula and any other essentials the families request.

Without the need to worry about purchasing essentials for their baby, caregivers can focus on what is important — their babies’ health and happiness.

This is the only program where baby equipment is distributed — there are specific restrictions to participate. Recipients are pre-selected on a limited basis through our community partners.

By the numbers
  • 40% of babies born in Westchester County are born to mothers on Medicaid.
  • There is NO designated state or federal assistance for the purchase of necessities for babies.
  • 19% of children in Westchester are hungry or at risk for hunger.
Program highlights
  • Every month, in addition to the essentials provided, each baby receives a months’ worth of new or like new seasonably appropriate clothing.
  • We distribute over 140,000 baby essentials each year.

DIAPER BANK

Program Overview

914Cares Diaper Bank provides a week’s worth of diapers to “fill the gap” each month for the 1 in 2 US families that are struggling with diaper need.

  • What is a diaper bank? A diaper bank is an institution or organization that provides diapers to individuals and families living in poverty who do not have access to diapers.
  • What is diaper need? Simply put, diaper need is not having enough diapers.

Effects of diaper need:

  • Babies without enough diapers often suffer from physical ailments such as severe diaper rash which can lead to high levels of mental stress for both parents and children.
  • Daycare facilities usually require a days’ worth of diapers, therefore, families without are less likely to be accepted to daycares, leaving parents unable to attend work or school.
  • There is a demonstrated link between diaper need and maternal depression – mothers who cannot provide essentials to their babies.

By the numbers
  • 1 in 2 US families with young children struggle to afford diapers.
  • Nationally, 1 in 4 parents experiencing diaper need said they missed school or work because they didn’t have enough diapers for their babies.
  • 46% of families cut back on other essentials, such as food and utilities to afford diapers.
  • 70% of families reported increased feelings of stress and anxiety, unmet health needs, and barriers to work.
Program highlights
  • 914Cares is a proud member of the National Diaper Bank Network. Our membership allows us to connect with other diaper banks across the nation and raise public awareness for diaper need.
  • We distribute 500,000 diapers and 20,000 packages of wipes per year.
  • We work with over 95 Community Partners in more than 20 Westchester communities, getting diapers where they are needed most.
  • Babies receive one package of wipes and between 25 and 50 diapers per month.
